Tholen is a Managing Director in Houlihan Lokey’s Oil & Gas Exploration and
Production Group and Head of the Acquisitions & Divestitures (A&D) practice,
with the responsibility of coordinating and developing the bank’s upstream technical
A&D advisory activities. He is based in the firm’s Houston office.
Tholen joined Houlihan Lokey in 2015 with more than 23 years of A&D,
engineering (drilling/reservoir/completions), and field operations experience. In
the last 10 years, he has provided full-service transactional activities for
clients in the buying, selling, and merging of companies and properties across more
than 80 trades, representing over $12 billion in transactions.
Tholen began his career with UNOCAL in reservoir engineering, focusing on
inland waters and shallow shelf Louisiana properties, before moving to the oil
services side working for BJ Services. For the next 10 years, he was employed
as a region engineer in drilling and fracturing, covering dozens of fields and
hundreds of wells in the L48 and GOM. In his last five years with BJ, he was
dedicated as an in-house engineer to BP and Conoco, where his focus was on Lobo
and Wamsutter drilling, as well as San Juan Basin and Jonah completions.
Tholen began the technical advisory part of his career with Albrecht &
Associates, Inc., a sellside boutique firm, where he successfully provided
technical analysis, marketing, transaction management, negotiating, and closing
services for seven years before formally entering banking. In 2012, Mr. Tholen
joined Crédit Agricole CIB as Head of A&D for the Americas, charged with
creating and leading their A&D platform, where he worked on domestic and
cross-border client mandates in the fields of not only A&D, but also reserve-based
lending, equity offerings, high-yield debt, and LNG.
Tholen is a frequent speaker and moderator at professional panels and forums,
such as Hart’s A&D Conference, Enercom, and SPE-GC. He holds a B.S. in
Chemical Engineering from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and an MBA
from the University of Houston.
